Christoffer Relander

In this piece Christoffer Relander uses a piece of bark and edits it over his eyes, forehead and hair. The grass on top of the bark acts as his hair. This piece makes me feel a mix of emotions, the lighting making me sad, the expressions on his face make me scared, and the way it's put together in general really interests me and makes me happy. This piece is a close up and blurs out his shoulders slightly so it focuses on his face and the bark. I like this piece a lot because it is very artistic and kind of gives a feeling of hidden meaning to it. He has made this by using layers, using black and white, and the portrait taken seems to be taken in a studio with lighting shining behind him. I really like the fact that the bark is covering his eyes and upper face so that all of the expression is coming from the bark, the grass, his mouth and lower face. It kind of makes me think that the story of it is that nature is life, and we are a part of nature. I really want to create a piece inspired by this, I could take the idea of covering my upper face with and object or something and keeping my lower face clear.

Jamie Grizzell Erin Case

WWW: I made it work visually and it works well.
NTT: Try and blend it slightly better as it still isn't blended that well.

Landscape Portrait

What I liked: I like that the ridge line looks like my mouth and the upper one looks like my eye.
WWW: It looks very nice and interesting with the rocks on my face and the trees on my arms.
NTT: Maybe cut it out better.

I made a second one and didn't like this one as much, the rock from before made my work seem better.

Portrait Homework

Artist Research Erin Case

In these pictures, Erin takes the background image and blends it so that parts that stand out in the image line up with facial features. She only keeps her hair and certain clothing. She keeps her hair and features of the image related, so if she is wearing dark with dark hair, she will make the background dark. I like these pieces because they are quite abstract and different, they have a kind of natural feel to them but at the same time feeling unrealistic. She uses a mix of colours that are quite contrasted. She has used lots of layering and blending. The edges on her hair and clothes are perfectly cut out. they seem to be made to look a bit scruffy and not blended. She uses quite a lot of blue and purple based colours, she also uses red a bit. These pieces are quite close up. The background is usually natural and has the sky in it. All the background usually links up with the hair, facial features, and clothing. The colour seems to be quite saturated and the brightness seems to be quite low. I could take the idea of linking up facial features with the background.

Final Piece & Evaluation

The theme I tried to convey with this image was colour on one side and dark and dullness on the other. I got the idea for this from moods and how they change and that there's always a good side. My skills of blend modes and cutting and pasting have improved through the project. I think I have used the blend modes well because everything is blended together quite well. I think I could improve on my cutting and pasting to make the copied stuff more realistic. I wish I could of explored filters more because I didn't use them much. The artist I looked at was Keith Hubacek, it gave me the idea of adding vibrant, bold colours to make everything stand out.
